Exellent micro 2/3 video recorder (set to 1080i), but let down by marginal sound quality with the usual (unexplained) low-frequency rolloff, a less serious HF rolloff (cutting off at 16kHz) and a rather high noise level.

Tested with input signal set to alignment level = -30dBu single ended the headroom is only 4dB. Dynamic range (468-wtd) is thus barely 4+52 = 56dB. The Sony FX1 from which I get very acceptable recordings has 18+54 = 72dB. A good 16bit recorder or CD player should have 18+68 = 86dB!! This camera can give reasonable sound with carefully optimised levels and EQ, but what a pity Panasonic consider this to be acceptable.

Note that automatic gain control still operates above +4dBAL as indicated by the low distortion levels right up to +18dBAL. This has a slowish (1 to 2 sec recovery time) so it may be possible to set input level on the high side for max possible dynamic range and get away without undue distortion (albeit with compression).
